What is Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment, also known as Phase 1 orthodontics, focuses on identifying and addressing bite or alignment concerns in children while their jaws are still developing. This might involve using expanders, limited braces, or space maintainers to create room for permanent teeth and help guide the growth of the jaw and facial structures.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic visit by age 7. Not all children will need treatment this early, but those who do can benefit from shorter, more effective care in their teen years, or avoid it altogether.

The Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Starting orthodontic care early can help prevent more serious dental problems down the road. By identifying growth and spacing issues early, we can take a conservative, customized approach tailored to your child’s development. Early intervention can improve oral function, reduce the need for extractions, and make future treatment (if needed) simpler and faster.

Intercept problems early

We can identify crowding, bite misalignment, or jaw growth issues while they’re easier to correct, often avoiding more invasive treatment later.

Guide proper growth

Custom appliances can help guide jaw development and create room for permanent teeth, setting the stage for a healthy, confident smile.

Boost long-term outcomes

Early treatment can reduce the need for future extractions or surgeries and make future braces or aligners more efficient and effective.

The Early Orthodontic Treatment Process

Early treatment is typically a shorter, more targeted phase of care that lays the foundation for long-term dental health. Here’s how it works:

Phase 1 treatment may reduce or eliminate the need for full braces in the future, However, if needed, we’ll transition smoothly into Phase 2 at the right time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Curious about whether your child might benefit from early orthodontic care? Here are answers to some of the most common questions we hear:

While it may seem early, it can save your child from needing extensive care in the future. Early evaluation allows us to monitor jaw growth and catch issues before they become more complex. Treatment may not be needed, but early observation is key.

Mouth breathing, extended thumb sucking, early/late tooth loss, or crowded teeth may indicate the need for orthodontic evaluation.

Phase 1 is early intervention focused on jaw and facial development. Phase 2 focuses on aligning the permanent teeth, either during the teen years or even adulthood.

Phase 1 treatment typically lasts 9–12 months and is followed by a rest phase until the child is ready for Phase 2 if needed.

Many insurance plans include coverage for early treatment. We’re happy to help verify your benefits and explain all costs upfront.
