At Lume Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we believe that a child’s first dental visit should be a fun, positive experience. Whether it’s your baby’s first tooth or your toddler’s first time in the chair, we’re here to make their introduction to dental care gentle, joyful, and stress-free for both of you.

The first dental visit sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy habits. Early dental care helps prevent cavities, builds trust between your child and their dentist, and gives you the tools you need to support your child’s oral health at home. Most importantly, it helps your child feel safe and confident at the dentist, right from the start.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth erupting. While it may seem young, starting dental visits early allows us to monitor growth, catch concerns early, and give you age-appropriate guidance every step of the way. Plus, it allows kids to get used to dental appointments, setting them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
We’ll greet you and your child with friendly faces and help you complete any necessary forms, or confirm what you’ve filled out ahead of time.
We take time to get to know your child on their terms. Whether that means a ride in the dental chair or a lap exam for infants, we move at their pace.
The dentist will count your child’s teeth, examine their gums, jaws, and bite, and check for any signs of decay or developmental issues. We’ll also clean the teeth if your child is comfortable.
We’ll talk through everything we observed and give you helpful tips for brushing, teething, diet, fluoride, thumb-sucking, and more. There’s no rush and no judgment. Just honest, helpful guidance.
We’re here to guide you and your child through every step of their first appointment. From a gentle exam to answering all your questions, our team focuses on building trust and creating a calm, welcoming experience for families.

• Stay Positive: Talk about the visit like it’s a fun adventure.
• Practice at Home: Let your child “play dentist” or brush their stuffed animal’s teeth.
• Bring Comfort Items: A favorite toy, blanket, or even your presence in the room can help your child feel at ease.

Have questions about your first orthodontic visit? We have answers.
Usually not. If your child is very young or has few teeth, X-rays may not be necessary unless we see something of concern.
It's totally normal! We’re experts at working with children at every stage—and we’re here to earn their trust, not rush the process.
Most first visits last around 30–45 minutes, depending on your child’s comfort level and what needs to be done.
